Yastremska Advances In Porsche Tennis Grand Prix Qualifying

Top seed Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine needed just 61 minutes to advance to the second of qualifying for the WTA 500 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart on Saturday. She is vying for one of the four qualifying spots that will be elevated to the 28-player main draw, which begins play on Monday.

The 24-year-old from Odessa, ranked 46th, defeated No. 534 Ana Konjuh of Croatia, 6-1, 6-4, on Court 1. Yastremska won 73 percent of her first-serve points, converted four of eight break points and outpointed Konjuh 57-40.

Next, Yastremska will face No. 6 seed Ella Seidel of Germany, one of three Germans who began in the 16-player qualifying draw. The 20-year-old Hamburg native, ranked 125th, beat Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium, 6-1, 6-4, in one hour and 25 minutes in back of five aces and four of five break-point conversions. Seidel outpointed Wickmayer 67-50.

Also, advancing to Sunday’s second round of qualifying were: No. 5 seed Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus, who eliminated American Louisa Chirico, 6-0, 6-4; Jana Fett of Croatia, who upset No. 4 seed Yuliia Starodubtseva of Ukraine, 7-6 (4), 6-3; No. 3 seed Erika Andreeva of Russia, older sister of Mirra Andreeva, who defeated German wild card Mariela Thamm, 6-3, 6-4; No. 2 seed Veronika Kudermetova of Russia, who beat Kathinka Von Deichman of Liechtenstein, 6-3, 6-2; Rebeka Masarova of Switzerland, who defeated alternate Zhang Shuai of China, 6-2, 6-1; and No. 8 seed Sara Errani of Italy, who rallied to beat German wild card Nastasja Schunk, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Around the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix

• No. 37 Rebecca Sramkova of Slovakia and No. 38 Anastasia Potapova of Russia were elevated to the main draw on Friday to replace Zheng Qinwen of China and Ons Jabeur of Tunisia, who pulled out of the tournament earlier in the week citing injuries.

• The singles draw will take place on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. CET at Porsche Arena. Operating Tournament Director Anke Huber will be joined by Germany’s Laura Siegemund for the draw ceremony.

• Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, who is projected to be the No. 6 seed in the main draw, spent a part of her Saturday touring the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart.

The Porsche Tennis Grand Prix was held on indoor hard courts from 1978 to 2008, but since 2009 it has been played on indoor clays courts. The state-of-the-art Porsche Arena in Stuttgart has been the tournament host site since 2006.
