Kirsten Flipkens caused the upset of Day 2 at the €250,000 WTA Mallorca Open, knocking out top-seed Garbine Muguruza 6-3, 6-4. In midsummer temperatures, the 30-year-old from Belgium capitalized on all of her three break point opportunities to prevail in one hour and 12 minutes. It was the second victory for Flipkens over the world number two from Spain, following her win on grass in s’Hertogenbosch in 2013. She will next take on Monica Puig, who ousted Julia Görges 6-4, 7-5 in one hour and 34 minutes.

Second seed Jelena Jankovic defeated Ana Konjuh 7-5, 6-3. The world number 25 from Serbia hit four aces, winning 70% of her first service points to advance in one hour and 14 minutes. Jankovic will play Belgian qualifier Elise Mertens in the second round, who battled past Francesca Schiavone 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 in one hour and 53 minutes.

Sabine Lisicki upset the tournament’s number four Kristina Mladenovic, who finished runner-up to CoCo Vandeweghe at the Ricoh Open last Sunday, winning 6-4, 6-4. The 26-year-old German saved both break points she faced, converting two of her own to advance in one hour and 26 minutes. Lisicki will next face Mariana Duque-Marino.
