Holger Rune has clinched the title of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell. The sixth seed from Denmark defeated home favourite and top seed Carlos Alcaraz 7-6(6), 6-2 in Sunday’s singles final.

Rune capitalized on three of his five break-point chances and won 53 per cent of the total points played to succeed in one hour and 40 minutes.

“It means the world, it was such a great match,” said Rune. “In the beginning, I was a little bit stressed, because Carlos obviously plays big-time tennis. I had to breathe a lot and find my rhythm. After he broke me, I got more into the match and played my tennis. The first set was a big battle, it was super important to win it and gain the momentum. I’m so proud of myself.”

Rune earned his fifth ATP Tour career title, his first since the 2023 BMW Open in Munich. The 21-year-old pocketed €535,185 in prize money as well as 500 ATP Ranking points, ensuring him a Top 10 return on Monday.
