Thiem And Anderson Out Of German Open Championships In Hamburg

The German Open Tennis Championships in Hamburg, which is going to start this weekend, had to suffer additional two withdrawals from the ATP 500 event. Top-seed Dominc Thiem and the tournament’s designated number two Kevin Anderson pulled out with illness.

“Sicknesses and injuries happen. There is nothing you can do,” tournament director Michael Stich stated.

“Dominic Thiem and Kevin Anderson have withdrawn the from German Open Tennis Championships due to medical reasons. We wish them both a speedy recovery!” –

Thiem suffers from an infection of the sinuses and has been ill in bed since Monday. The Austrian youngster, however, wants to return to the courts next week in order to start practicing again.

The event has alreday had to deal with a couple of withdrawals from players due to the Davis Cup, held the same week. World number 22 Philipp Kohlschreiber will now lead the line-up. Benoit Paire, Pablo Cuevas and Germany’s promising teenager Alexander Zverev will follow as the tournament’s highest ranked players.
