TORONTO/STARNBERG, March 19, 2026

Tennis Canada has announced the appointment of Martin Laurendeau as Head of Men’s Tennis, a role in which he will oversee elite-level men’s tennis across the country. With more than 40 years of international experience as both a player and coach, Laurendeau will now shift his focus from mentoring individual athletes to supporting the broader development of high-performance tennis in Canada.

Laurendeau competed on the ATP Tour from 1986 to 1993, reaching a career-high ranking of world No. 90. He also represented Canada at the 1988 Olympic Games and played three Davis Cup ties. Since transitioning into coaching in 1994, he has built an extensive career, working with top players such as Daniel Nestor, Denis Shapovalov, and Gabriel Diallo.

“I’m incredibly honoured to take on this new position as Head of Men’s Tennis at Tennis Canada,” said Laurendeau. “Having been part of this organization for over 30 years and seeing Canadian tennis evolve into what it is today—with more players competing on tour, Canadians reaching new milestones, and recent success for Team Canada—I’m excited to help build on this momentum.”

The Montreal native previously served as Canada’s Davis Cup captain, taking over the role in 2004 from Grant Connell. He remained in the position until stepping down ahead of the 2018 season, compiling a 16–13 record. In addition, Laurendeau was part of the Canadian coaching staff at four Olympic Games between 2004 and 2016.

He is also one of only three Level 5 coaches in Canada, highlighting his expertise and standing within the sport.

Alongside this appointment, Frank Dancevic will continue in his role as Canada’s Davis Cup captain, ensuring continuity within the national team structure.
