UMAG, July 22, 2016
Fabio Fognini is the only seeded player, who advanced to the semi-finals of the Konzum Croatia Open Umag. On Friday, the world number 39 from Italy gained his second victory over Damir Dzumhur in as many meetings between the two, winning 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. Following 2013, Fognini advanced to his second title match in Istria in one hour and 25 minutes.
The tournament’s number four has returned to Umag for the ninth consecutive year and seems to enjoy his stay here every time.
“As the matches start pretty late here, you have the chance to recover and sleep pretty long. That’s what I like. It is a really nice tournament,” he said.

Fognini will next take on Gastao Elias. The 25-year-old Portuguese, who is playing on a career high number 72, ousted sixth seed Pablo Carreno-Busta 6-4, 6-4. Elias saved four of the eight break points he faced, converting six of his own to reach his second consecutive semi-final after Bastad in one hour and 12 minutes.
Andrej Martin knocked out the tournament’s number two Joao Sousa, winning 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. The 26-year-old Slovakian sent down eight aces and capitalized on four of his six break point oportunities to prevail in two hours and 11 minutes.
In his first semi-final on the ATP World Tour, Martin will collide with Carlos Berlocq. The Argentine veteran took out third favourite Jeremy Chardy with a 6-4, 6-2 victory. Berlocq won 54% of the total points to finish the encounter in one hour and 20 minutes.
