Feliciano López finally landed the Gstaad title, 10 years on from a runner-up finish to Richard Gasquet. The 34-year-old Spaniard defeated Robin Haase 6-4, 7-5 in the final of the J. Safra Sarasin Swiss Open on Sunday morning.

López hit eight aces, winning 86% of his first service points to seal victory in one hour and 17 minutes. He captured his fifth ATP World Tour title in his 14th final. It is his first trophy since June 2014 at Eastbourne and his maiden title on clay.

López is the sixth different Spaniard to win an ATP World Tour title in 2016 – after Roberto Bautista Agut (2 titles), Rafael Nadal (2), Nicolas Almagro (1), Albert Ramos-Vinolas (1) and Fernando Verdasco (1).

“It’s an amazing feeling, I’ve been waiting 10 years to win this title. It’s been a long wait since 2006, but it’s been worth it. This is a very special tournament, with a lot of tradition, where a lot of Spaniards have won in the past. It’s a unique place to play,” López was pleased afterwards.

Haase is now 2-3 in ATP World Tour finals. Three years ago, he lost to Mikhail Youzhny in the Gstaad title match.

“Three years ago, I received a goat [named Antonia] for reaching the final. So this year, I was dreaming about winning a cow and the trophy. Hopefully I can come back next year and do better. Congrats to Feli, who played great his week,” the 29-year-old Dutch told.

Later the day, fourth seeds Julio Peralta and Horacio Zeballos claimed their second team title, winning 7-6, 6-2 over number one favourites Mate Pavic and Michael Venus in one hour and five minutes.

“We’re really happy and enjoyed this tournament a lot. It’s pleasing to finish the week this way. I feel really good playing with Horacio and we’re motivated to keep playing together,” Peralta said.

“We’ve beaten the best team of the tournament. This give us tonnes of confidence to play together in the future. In my opinion, we kept our focus from the first ball, trying to dominate the match. That was a key,” Zeballos added.
