The final round of last-16 matches at the Danube Upper Austria Open in Mauthausen delivered a mix of dominant performances and gripping three-set battles, as the quarterfinal line-up was completed on Thursday.

One of the standout stories came from last week’s Oeiras Open champion Roman Safiullin, who edged past second seed Titouan Droguet in a tense three-set encounter. After taking the opening set comfortably, Safiullin was pushed into a decider, where momentum shifted repeatedly. The final set featured missed match points and multiple break opportunities before the Russian held his nerve to close out a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory in two hours and 16 minutes.

Jaime Faria also showed resilience, turning around his match against Czech qualifier Martin Krumich. After dropping the first set, the 22-year-old Portuguese steadily raised his level, improving both consistency and shot selection. His patience paid off as he claimed the next two sets 6-3, 6-4 to secure his place in the quarterfinals after more than two hours on court.

Another player carrying strong momentum is Spain’s Miguel Damas, who continues to capitalize on his second chance in the main draw as a lucky loser. Following an earlier upset over top seed Francesco Maestrelli, Damas delivered a commanding 6-3, 6-1 win against qualifier Mika Brunold. It marked his third victory over the Swiss without dropping a set, underlining his current confidence and form.

David Jorda Sanchis also progressed with a solid straight-sets performance. After overcoming an early deficit, the Spaniard took control of his match with aggressive and consistent play, sealing his spot in the next round with authority. He will now face Safiullin in what promises to be a compelling quarterfinal clash.

Kohlschreiber/Schwaerzler fall in doubles

In doubles action, one of the day’s most dramatic matches involved the pairing of Philipp Kohlschreiber and Joel Schwaerzler. The German-Austrian duo fought back strongly after losing the opening set against Alex Martinez and Bruno Pujol Navarro, pushing the match into a deciding match tiebreak.

Despite their momentum and a spirited performance, they ultimately fell just short, losing 6-2, 6-7(5), 10-8 in a tightly contested encounter that featured several high-quality rallies and crucial points decided by the narrowest of margins.
