MAUTHAUSEN, May 1, 2026
Quarterfinal Friday at the Danube Upper Austria Open powered by SKE unfolded under clear blue skies in Mauthausen, with perfect conditions setting the stage for a high-quality day of tennis. On International Workers’ Day, a strong crowd gathered to follow the action as one of the tournament’s standout stories continued.
US-American teenager Darwin Blanch extended his impressive run, once again showing composure and maturity beyond his years to book a place in the next round. The 18-year-old, who knocked out No. 3 seed Hugo Gaston in the second round, beat Czech qualifier Matthew Donald 6-3, 6-4.
In the one-hour and 30-minute encounter, Blanch hit 34 winners and broke his rival’s serve three times to advance to his third semi-final on the ATP Challenger Tour after the Sarasota Open last month and finishing runner-up to Mitchell Krueger in Knoxville last year.

“Today was the best I felt in the three matches I played. Each match I became better and better, increasing my level. I was super aggressive today,” Blanch told Tennis TourTalk. “He was running a lot and was making me play a lot. I tried to move him around and it definitely worked.”
Up next for Blanch, who is coached by former top 15 Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela, will be Jaime Faria. The seventh-seeded Portuguese cruised past Spanish lucky loser Miguel Damas, 6-1, 6-0 in just under one hour of play. Faria was dominant during most of the rallies, didn’t face a break point and capitalized on six of his own 11 break-point chances.
“I was very solid right from the beginning of the match. I managed to focus from the first to the last point. I am very happy with my performance and get a lot of confidence,” Faria said.
“Conditions are very good here. It was less windy compared to yesterday. It’s pretty fast but I like it. I am a player, who adapts well. I had a good start into the season in Australia and played a good swing in South America. Now I am feeling good here in Mauthausen and trying to focus on my level.”
Neumayer to face Safiullin
In the bottom half of the draw, Lukas Neumayer is still flying the Austrian flag. The 23-year-old Salzburg native edged past Laslo Djere of Serbia 7-684), 6-3. In front of packed stands, Neumayer won 82 per cent of his first-service points and 53 per cent of the total points played to seal victory in one hour and 43 minutes.
The world No. 195, who captured his maiden Challenger title in Barletta, Italy one month ago, will next take on in-form Russian Roman Safiullin. The champion of last week’s Oeiras Open continued his winning streak with a hard-fought 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Spanish qualifier David Jorda Sanchis. The encounter lasted one hour and 52 minutes.
