VIENNA/STARNBERG, May 1, 2026
Vienna is gearing up to become the heart of Austrian tennis this autumn, as the city prepares to host not one but two major international events. Alongside the prestigious Erste Bank Open (October 24–November 1), the spotlight will also fall on the Davis Cup, bringing world-class team competition back to the capital after an 18-year absence.
On September 18–19, the Austrian team will face Belgium in the decisive second qualifying round for the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna (November 24–29). The tie will take place at the Wiener Athletiksport Club (WAC), marking the first time in the club’s long history that it hosts a Davis Cup encounter. A temporary clay court stadium will be constructed on the club’s football pitch, accommodating around 5,000 spectators.
Led by captain Jürgen Melzer, Austria aims to build on its impressive 3–2 away victory in Japan earlier this year and secure a second consecutive qualification for the Finals among the world’s top eight nations.
The decision to return the Davis Cup to Vienna has been met with widespread enthusiasm. City officials, federation representatives, and organizers alike see the event as both a sporting highlight and a major opportunity to further promote tennis in Austria. The atmosphere is expected to be electric, with hopes of creating a true “tennis festival” at the historic WAC grounds.
Organized in cooperation with the Austrian Tennis Federation and the e|motion group—long-time hosts of the Erste Bank Open—the event aims to capture the passion and excitement of top-level tennis and bring it to a unique, tradition-rich setting near Vienna’s Prater.
With strong opponents, a home crowd, and a place at the Davis Cup Finals on the line, Vienna is set to witness a thrilling chapter in Austrian tennis history.
