Fresh off his title run at the Oeiras Open 125 in Portugal, Roman Safiullin kept his momentum going with another dominant week on the ATP Challenger Tour. The 28-year-old Russian carried his winning form to the Danube Upper Austria Open by SKE in Mauthausen, where he capped off an impressive run by securing his second consecutive title.

In a gripping final on Sunday, the 28-year-old defeated seventh-seeded Portuguese Jaime Faria 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(4) after two hours and 22 minutes, sealing victory in a nerve-wracking third-set tie-break to bring a high-quality tournament week to a thrilling conclusion.

The championship match delivered everything that defines top-level Challenger tennis: intensity, momentum swings, and high drama. Early on, both players were solid on serve, with few break opportunities. The first turning point came at 2-2 in the opening set, when Faria found his rhythm, playing boldly to secure the decisive break. Full of confidence after an impressive week, the Portuguese took the set 6-4 in just 34 minutes.

Safiullin responded immediately in the second set. Applying pressure with aggressive forehands, he broke early and took control. Although Faria managed to level at 4-4, the world No. 176 held his nerve at the crucial moment, closing out the set 6-4 to force a decider.

The final set evolved into a tense, evenly balanced battle. Faria struck first, breaking for a 4-3 lead, but Safiullin hit back instantly. With neither player able to pull away, the match was decided in a tie-break, where Safiullin produced a stunning down-the-line forehand winner on his second match point to clinch the title.

The triumph marks Safiullin’s second ATP Challenger title in a row and extends his winning streak to 12 matches. Remarkably, his run began in qualifying in Oeiras, underlining the consistency and form he has found on the tour.

“It was a really tough match,” Safiullin said afterwards. “First of all, congratulations to Jaime for a great week – he improved round by round. It wasn’t the highest level at the beginning, but it became very intense towards the end. I’m very happy with the win – it feels great.” He also praised the tournament organization, adding: “It feels like home here – from the courts to the hotel, everything is perfect.”

Despite the defeat, Faria also took positives from the week. “It’s my second final this year. Even if it’s another loss, it’s a very good start to the season,” he said. “Roman is an incredible player—he probably shouldn’t even be playing Challengers. I’ll try to follow him in the rankings and hopefully see him again at the big tournaments soon.”

Tournament director Florian Leitgeb expressed his satisfaction with the event: “It was a fantastic week with an incredible atmosphere and many highlights. We delivered at a very high level – just like the players.”

Attention now turns to the next event on the Austrian Challenger calendar, the NÖ Open, scheduled to take place in Tulln from September 6–13, 2026.
