PARIS/STARNBERG, June 1, 2026

Italian Matteo Berrettini continued his impressive comeback at Roland Garros, reaching his first Grand Slam quarterfinal since 2022 with a straight-sets victory over Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo.

The former World No. 6 and Wimbledon finalist, who has battled a series of injuries in recent years and is making his first appearance in Paris since 2021, delivered another commanding performance to advance to the last eight.

“This [tennis] is the love of my life, because if it wasn’t I wouldn’t be here,” Berrettini said in his on-court interview. “After all the setbacks, all the injuries, all the bad moments, I came back once again. There were moments where it was really tough to go back and hit the ball, because I wasn’t ready and sure of my confidence.”

Berrettini will be joined in the quarterfinals by fellow Italian Flavio Cobolli. The 10th seed overcame US-American Zachary Svajda in four sets to keep his title hopes alive.

Fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime also progressed, defeating Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets. The Canadian is now the highest-ranked player remaining in his section of the draw.

“It has been a dream since I was a child,” Auger-Aliassime said.

“Since I was 12 or 13 it has always been a dream for me to get this far. I am a French-speaking guy – I can say I am very, very happy to get your support and I hope I will have your support until the end.

“I do feel like I am at home. There is always a great connection between Canada and France.”

In the women’s competition, Anna Kalinskaya edged Anastasia Potapova in a dramatic deciding-set tie-break to book her place in the quarterfinals. Diana Shnaider also advanced after producing a dominant final set against Madison Keys, while Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska continued her dream run by defeating France’s Diane Parry to reach the last eight in Paris.

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka completes straight-set win over fellow four-time major winner Naomi Osaka to reach quarter-finals

“Super happy with my serve. I didn’t expect to be serving that great,” Sabalenka said.

“Not the best service game I have played in my life, but in this tournament, for sure. I felt like I am getting better with every match I am playing. Super pleased overall with the performance today.”
