Nick Kyrgios delivered one of the standout performances in the opening round at the BOSS OPEN in Stuttgart on Tuesday, defeating France’s Corentin Moutet 6-3, 6-4 in his first ATP Tour match since the start of the year.
The 31-year-old Australian, returning after multiple surgeries and a lengthy injury layoff, needed just 68 minutes to secure his place in the second round. Early breaks in both sets proved decisive against the world No. 36.

“I had many surgeries and I’m so happy to be back,” Kyrgios said after the match. “I felt the support from the crowd from the very beginning. I played really good tennis, and I’m very happy with how my body feels. Stuttgart has always been an important stop on my schedule, and I’m thrilled to get the win.”
Kyrgios will next face Japanese qualifier Sho Shimabukuro, who defeated France’s Quentin Halys 6-4, 6-2.
German hopes were boosted by victories from both Yannick Hanfmann and Jan-Lennard Struff.
Hanfmann edged US-American Aleksandar Kovacevic 7-6(5), 7-6(4) in a serving-dominated encounter that lasted one hour and 50 minutes. The Karlsruhe native saved all four break points he faced and reached the Stuttgart round of 16 for the fourth time.
“It was a very close, classic grass-court match,” Hanfmann said. “We both served well and stayed solid when the opportunities came. Overall, I’m satisfied with my performance. It’s exactly the kind of start you hope for to the grass-court season.”
Hanfmann will now meet Italy’s Mattia Bellucci, who eliminated seventh seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina earlier in the tournament.
Struff also progressed, overcoming Canadian qualifier Alexis Galarneau 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-3 after two hours and six minutes. The German now faces third seed Alexander Bublik in the round of 16.
“He gives you almost no rhythm and feels very comfortable on grass,” Struff said of Bublik. “I beat him recently at Roland Garros, but grass is completely different. He won our last grass-court meeting and went on to win the tournament.”
The day ended in disappointment for Germany’s other representatives. Wild card Tom Gentzsch pushed Australia’s Rinky Hijikata to three sets before falling 6-7(7), 7-6(2), 6-3. Fellow wild card Diego Dedura lost to Australia’s James Duckworth 6-4, 6-3.
Meanwhile, Daniel Altmaier came agonizingly close to a major upset against 2023 Stuttgart champion Frances Tiafoe. After splitting the opening two sets, Altmaier suffered a leg scare early in the decider and eventually fell 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-4 after a hard-fought two hours and 26 minutes.
