HALLE/WASHINGTON, June 17, 2026 (by Michael Dickens)
Four American competitors commanded much of the attention during Wednesday’s play at the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle, North Rhine-Westphalia as the quarterfinals began to take shape in this annual ATP 500 grass-court tune-up for Wimbledon. By the end of day, three of them – Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe – had advanced to the next round.
• No. 5 seed Taylor Fritz was pushed to three sets by No. 48 Zizou Bergs of Belgium. The World 9 from the United States finally prevailed 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-4 in two hours and 13 minutes on Heristo-Arena, three days after losing the Stuttgart final.
In his first Halle appearance since 2019, Fritz recorded his 40th win on grass this decade after striking 16 aces, winning 79 percent (46 of 58) of his first-serve points and converting two of five break points. He outpointed Bergs 106-100. The Belgian No. 1 has lost six straight tour-level matches since a first-round win in Munich last April.

“It was a tough one. First set I did really well to get back in after the first game and saved some break points,” Fritz said during his on-court interview with ATP Media. “I played a very good tie-breaker I thought. Second set, I had some chances and played some good points. … He just played a bit better and played a very good game to break me.
“I was happy in the third [set] to take advantage of a game where he threw some double [faults] in and gave me a bit more of a look. Luckily, that’s all I needed.”
Next, Fritz will face No. 61 Fabian Marozsan of Hungary in the second round on Thursday.

• No. 3 seed Ben Shelton began his quest to become the first man to win ATP 500 titles on clay, grass and hard courts in a single season since the series began in 2009. The World No. 5 from the United States brought a 4-1 head-to-head advantage into his first-round match against 65th-ranked lucky loser Lorenzo Sonego of Italy, who replaced injured wild card Nick Kyrgios of Australia in the main draw.
Three days after winning the Stuttgart title over Fritz, the 23-year-old Shelton ran his winning streak to five straight after defeating Sonego, 7-5, 6-3, in one hour and 19 minutes.

Shelton was spot on throughout much of his first-round match against Sonego, whose win-loss record against Top-10 opponents dropped to a paltry 7-37. Shelton won 89 percent (33 of 37) of his first-serve points, converted three of six break points and outpointed Sonego 61-49. The victory improved Shelton’s 2026 win-loss record to 24-9.
“It’s certainly different than any grass I’ve played on,” Shelton said during his on-court interview with ATP Media. “I really enjoyed it. I think you get a lot out of playing aggressive tennis here, coming forward, serving-and-volleying. It’s nice to see it pay off when you’re brave and figuring out your opportunities to come to the net.”
Next, Shelton will face fellow American Ethan Quinn, ranked 66th, in the second round on Thursday.

Auger-Aliassime, who struck 22 aces and outpointed Tien 120-105, achieved his first Top 20 win on grass since defeating No. 6 Alexander Zverev at Wimbledon in 2021. He has now reached 70 tour-level quarterfinals and tied Jannik Sinner and Zverev for most quarterfinals this year (7).

Thursday’s Halle order of play
By the numbers
Taylor Fritz leads all players in grass wins in this decade (40). He’s 27-5 on grass courts since the start of the 2024 season.
“Quotable …”
“I thought I volleyed great today. Obviously, a new tournament, a new place. Not everything was perfect. I didn’t have a great serving day. These are things to try to continue to improve upon later in doubles and moving forward in my next singles [match] tomorrow.”
– World No. 5 Ben Shelton of the United States, during his on-court interview after advancing to the second round with a straight-set victory over lucky loser Lorenzo Sonego of Italy.
