Wednesday’s second-round matches at the 2026 Platzmann Open produced two German winners, with Henri Squire and Tom Gentzsch booking places in an all-German quarterfinal.
Squire delivered a composed performance to defeat Argentina’s Alex Barrena 6-4, 6-1. After a competitive opening set, the German found his rhythm and dominated the second to seal victory in straight sets.
“We both needed a little time to settle into the match,” Squire said afterwards. “I served well at the beginning. I had a few break chances that I couldn’t convert, but fortunately I managed to break at 5-4. I then got off to a good start in the second set, broke early, and I’m very happy with how solidly I finished the match.”
Awaiting Squire in the quarterfinals is fellow German Tom Gentzsch, who produced an impressive display to defeat Chinese Taipei’s Chun-Hsin Tseng 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 in the Match of the Day. Tseng had advanced to the second round after top seed Alex Molcan retired injured in his opening-round match.
Gentzsch controlled the first set with aggressive baseline tennis and consistently put Tseng under pressure. After briefly losing his rhythm in the second set, he quickly regained control in the decider, racing to a 5-0 lead before closing out the match.
“I started really well, and the first set was excellent,” Gentzsch said. “I had a short blackout in the second set. In the third, I raised my level again, and things started working much better. I’m happy with my performance.”
The third German in action of the ATP Challenger event in Hagen, Diego Dedura, was unable to join his compatriots in the last eight. Facing third seed Zsombor Piros of Hungary, Dedura was outplayed 6-3, 6-2. Piros, now the only seeded player remaining in the draw, will meet Dutchman Guy den Ouden, who defeated qualifier Maxim Mrva 6-4, 6-2.

The doubles competition also got underway on Wednesday, but it proved to be a difficult day for the German players. Yannik Weißmann and Kristians Koldvells of TC Rot-Weiß Hagen fell 6-4, 6-4 to third seeds Thijmen Loof and Kaito Uesugi. Jannik Opitz and Dutch partner Fons van Sambeek suffered the same scoreline against Czech duo Zdenek Kolar and Matej Vocel.
The closest contest featured Tim Ruehl and Dutch partner Mick Veldheer, who pushed Nino Serdarusic and Admir Kalender to two tie-breaks before narrowly losing 7-6(2), 7-6(6).
