HAMBURG, August 9, 2026

World-class tennis has returned to Hamburg. Following this year’s ATP and WTA tournaments, the historic Rothenbaum Tennis Complex is once again hosting international professional tennis. On Sunday, the Hamburg Ladies & Gents Cup 2026 got underway, combining an ATP Challenger 75 and an ITF World Tennis Tour W50 event in a joint men’s and women’s tournament at Club an der Alster for the first time.

Under bright sunshine, the opening day marked the start of a week of high-level tennis. The first qualifying rounds featured numerous national talents and international professionals battling for coveted places in the main draws.

Vogt leads the women’s qualifying draw

Top seed Marie Vogt (WTA No. 512) lived up to her billing in the women’s qualifying competition. On Center Court, the 21-year-old from Plüderhausen defeated Hamburg native and three years younger Maja Michna 7-5, 6-0 after a difficult start.

“I had a bad start to the match and first had to get used to the conditions. In the end, experience probably made the difference,” Vogt said after the match. “It’s my first time here and I definitely enjoyed playing in such a big stadium.”

Vogt has won two of her three ITF World Tennis Tour titles this season, most recently triumphing in Krsko, Slovenia, in mid-July. She trains at the TWA Academy in Stuttgart but largely travels the professional circuit on her own.

“When you have to organize and finance your own trips, you grow up faster,” Vogt said with a smile about competing on the international circuit without a coach.

The German describes her game as versatile. “My best shot is probably my serve. I’ve also worked a lot on my forehand, although I hope to make it even more solid in the future,” she explained.

Away from tennis, Vogt is studying law via distance learning. “Becoming a lawyer is absolutely my dream job. But depending on how things develop with tennis, I could also focus entirely on the sport. The big goal is to qualify for a Grand Slam one day, so I can experience everything that comes with it.”

Barton impresses, Guttau fights through marathon

The men’s top seed also made a strong start to qualifying. Czech 22-year-old Hynek Barton (ATP No. 263) defeated Germany’s Tim Handel (ATP No. 780) 6-2, 6-4 in under an hour. He will next face Poland’s Fryderyk Lechno-Wasiutynski (ATP No. 636).

Niklas Guttau (ATP No. 1218), meanwhile, was involved in a marathon battle. The German wildcard fought for almost three and a half hours before overcoming fellow German Nikolai Barsukov (ATP No. 728) 6-7(7), 7-5, 6-3.

“It was very exhausting. It probably wasn’t the best tennis from either of us, but we solved a lot through the fight,” Guttau said afterwards.

The 26-year-old, who was born in Lübeck, is enjoying a genuine home tournament. “I’ve been playing at Club an der Alster for several years, so it’s obviously a real home event for me this week. I know the facility very well, but playing here competitively in front of so many familiar faces is something special.”

After the COVID-19 pandemic, Guttau was forced to step away from professional tennis due to financial challenges. Between August 2021 and May 2025, he did not play a single competitive match. Now, he is determined to make another push.

“The goal is to play as many matches as possible,” Guttau said. His opening-day victory was another step in that direction. He will next face Sweden’s Olle Wallin (ATP No. 407) with a place in the main draw at stake.

Qualifying finals and main-draw action on Monday

The final qualifying rounds will take place on Monday, while the ATP Challenger tournament will also get its main draw underway.

The match of the day features a German showdown between Reinbek native Mika Petkovic (ATP No. 429) and Niels McDonald (ATP No. 526), last year’s French Open boys’ singles champion. Their first-round encounter is scheduled for Center Court and will begin no earlier than 5 p.m.
