Luca Van Assche of France claimed the first edition of the Quebec National Bank Challenger presented by Cromwell on Sunday, defeating Greek Stefanos Sakellaridis 6-1, 6-4 in the final at Université Laval’s new Centre de tennis Synex Assurance at the PEPS sports centre.

The tournament’s No. 2 seed, Van Assche, reached the championship match of the ATP Challenger 125 event with wins over Japan’s Rei Sakamoto and fellow Frenchmen Benjamin Bonzi (No. 6) and Hugo Gaston (No. 4). Sakellaridis, meanwhile, had to play three additional matches, including two in qualifying before reaching the final. His biggest upset came in the quarterfinals, where he defeated top-seeded Zizou Bergs of Belgium 7-6(3), 4- 6, 6-4.

Van Assche earned $33,650 in prize money as well as 125 ATP Ranking points.

In doubles, Justin Boulais (Oakville, ON) and Duncan Chan (Markham, ON) made the most of their wild card, reaching the final, which included a win over No. 3 seeds Sander Gille of Belgium and Dutchman Sem Verbeek along the way.

They ultimately fell 6-3, 4-6, 10-3 to Bulgaria’s Alexander Donski and New Zealand’s Ajeet Rai, who entered the event as alternates
