Lucas Miedler and Neil Oberleitner made history on Sunday at the Rolex Shanghai Masters, securing Austria’s first ATP Masters 1000 doubles title in more than eight years. Their 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Francisco Cabral and JJ Tracy marked the latest milestone for Austrian doubles tennis since their coach in Shanghai, Alexander Peya, won the title in Madrid in 2018 alongside Croatia’s Nikola Mektic.

Following the historic achievement, Austrian Tennis Federation (ÖTV) sports director and Davis Cup captain Jürgen Melzer shared his thoughts on the duo’s impressive run. Melzer himself remains the only other Austrian to have won the doubles title in Shanghai, having lifted the trophy in 2010 alongside India’s Leander Paes.

“I think they had an extremely convincing week. I watched all three of their last matches, and they were clearly the better team in those encounters. What was particularly impressive throughout the week was how well and calmly they played in the crucial moments. They won virtually all the important points. That is how you win tournaments like this,” Melzer said.

The former world-class player also pointed out that Miedler and Oberleitner had demonstrated their ability to perform under pressure earlier in the season, particularly during their Davis Cup doubles match against Belgium on September 19.

“They showed relatively early on that they have the level required. I think they already proved that in the Davis Cup doubles match against Belgium. They demonstrated that they can play the important points really well. And that is what doubles is all about, especially with the no-ad scoring system: being there when it really matters.”

Melzer was also delighted by the strong relationship between the two players, both on and off the court, and believes their partnership could become even more successful.

“I am simply incredibly happy for both of them because you can see how much they enjoy playing together. They get along really well off the court, too. I think they will be a very dangerous team next year and hopefully add another ATP Masters 1000 title or two.”

Looking ahead to the Davis Cup by Generali Final 8 in Bologna, Melzer also hinted that the Austrian pair could play a decisive role for the national team.

“And perhaps we will need them again in Bologna, in a 1-1 situation. In that case, I have to say, I would feel relatively relaxed.”
