ALMATY/STARNBERG, October 24, 2026
Nikoloz Basilashvili advanced to the title match of the Almaty Open after defeating seventh-seeded Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas in a thrilling three-set semifinal encounter, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3 on Saturday.
The 34-year-old Georgian made a strong start, taking the opening set 6-4 with solid serving and consistent pressure on his opponent. Tsitsipas fought back in the second set, raising his level to force a tie-break, which he claimed 7-6(5) to send the match into a decider.
Basilashvili regained control in the final set, taking the initiative once again and eventually sealing a 6-3 victory to secure his place in his first tour-level final since 2022 after two hours and 16 minutes.

Following the match, the Georgian highlighted his effective serving and ability to capitalise on his opponent’s service games as key factors behind his success.
“I played a good match. I think I managed to be very effective on my serve and take my chances on my opponent’s serve,” Basilashvili said.
He also reflected on his missed opportunities in the second set, explaining why he was unable to close out the contest in straight sets.
“I had a lot of break points in the second set. At one point, I got a little nervous, which I think is why I lost the set in the tie-break. But I’m happy that I managed to refocus on my serve and take the opportunities that came my way,” he added.
Remarkably, Basilashvili entered the main draw of the ATP 250 event through qualifying and has now won six consecutive matches to reach the championship match.
The world No. 128 also drew on previous experience of making deep runs at ATP events after coming through qualifying.
“During my career, I have won ATP tournaments twice after starting in qualifying, so I already have that experience. Physically, I don’t feel tired despite having played six matches. I will simply keep doing what I’m doing,” he emphasized.
Basilashvili will now compete for the Almaty Open title, facing defending champion and top seed Daniil Medvedev, who benefited from the retirement of home favourite Alexander Bublik. The Russian was leading 6-3 when Bublik was forced to stop playing due to injury.
