MADRID/STARNBERG, October 31, 2026
RCT Barcelona-1899 has once again underlined its dominance in Spanish club tennis, defeating Club de Tenis Chamartin 4-1 in the final of the 56th Generali Spanish National Men’s Team Championship. The final was held on the courts of the Madrid-based club, with Barcelona completing an impressive double after its women’s team had also defeated Chamartin in Wednesday’s final.
The Catalan club last achieved the men’s and women’s double in 2019. This latest triumph also represents a successful response to last year’s final defeat against Real Murcia CT 1919 and further extends Barcelona’s remarkable record in the competition. The club has now won the men’s championship 36 times in its 56 editions.
Barcelona also maintained its perfect record against Chamartin in championship finals, having won all eight encounters between the two clubs.
For the Madrid side, the final offered an opportunity to crown the celebrations of its 60th anniversary with a national title. Chamartin last lifted the trophy in 2013 and has three championships to its name. Its maiden triumph in 1985 was particularly significant, making it the first club from outside Barcelona to be crowned Spanish team champion.
A Closer Contest Than The Scoreline Suggests
Despite the seemingly comfortable 4-1 result, the final was considerably closer than the overall score indicated. Four of the five singles matches went to a deciding set, with Max Alcala eventually securing the championship for Barcelona by defeating Vilius Gaubas 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
“It is an enormous source of pride, not just for me but for all my teammates, the captain and the club. It is an incredible feeling,” said Barcelona’s number one after delivering the decisive point. “We are all very good players, but above all, we get along extremely well off the court. We have great chemistry, whether at dinner or in everything else we do together.”
The tie began with a convincing victory for Alex Marti Pujolras, who defeated Sergi Perez Contri 6-3, 6-1 to give the visitors an early lead. Chamartin responded immediately, however, as Alejandro Moro recovered from a set down to overcome Roberto Carballes 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Barcelona regained the advantage through two hard-fought victories. Oriol Roca edged Alejo Sanchez Quilez 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 before Daniel Rincon completed another comeback against Miguel Damas, winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
With the Catalans leading 3-1, all eyes turned to the clash between Alcala and Gaubas. The Barcelona player eventually prevailed in three sets, securing the title without the need for a doubles rubber.
Distinguished Captains On Both Sides
Both teams were led by former professional players. Barcelona captain Marc Lopez acknowledged the competitive nature of the final despite the clear overall score.
“As in all these ties, the players are very evenly matched and several matches went to three sets. In the end, the scoreboard says 4-1, but it was extremely tough. There were many difficult matches and, fortunately, things went our way,” Lopez said.
His counterpart, Guillermo Garcia Lopez, was disappointed but proud of his team’s run to the final.
“We are left with a slightly bittersweet feeling because we wanted a little more, but we are still very happy to have reached the final. We were not seeded and, at certain moments, we felt we had a chance. Unfortunately, we never managed to get the tie to the doubles,” he explained.
Playing in front of their home supporters made the occasion particularly memorable for Chamartín’s players. Alejandro Moro highlighted the special atmosphere surrounding the championship.
“This week is very special for everyone throughout the year. Those of us who are here know that we look forward to it and save this week to experience these emotions. Having it at home makes everything even more special and beautiful. It is certainly something we will remember.”
Real Zaragoza Avoids Direct Relegation
In the play-off to avoid direct relegation, Real Zaragoza CT 1907 secured a convincing 4-1 victory over Campus Tenis Club from Granada.
The Zaragoza team will now face CT Reus Monterols from Tarragona, runners-up in the Spanish Second Category, in the promotion play-off to determine their place in next season’s competition.
For Campus Tenis Club, the defeat means relegation just one year after achieving a historic promotion for Andalusian tennis.
