Four unseeded players advanced to the quarterfinals of the €42,500 Internazionali di Tennis Manerbio on Wednesday. Matteo Donati knocked out the tournament’s number four Daniel Gimeno-Traver, winning 7-6, 1-6, 6-4. The 21-year-old from Alessandria sent down seven aces, saved eight of the 11 break points he faced, converting two of his own to prevail in two hours and nine minutes.
Donati will next play Nils Langer, who defeated Kenny de Schepper 6-4, 7-5. Donati will be joined by fellow Italian Lorenzo Sonego in the stage of the final eight. The world number 277, who entered the main draw with a wild card, beat Meerbusch runner-up Maximilian Marterer 7-6, 7-5. Sonego won 83% of his first service points to advance in one hour and 49 minutes.
Sonego will next play Jonathan Eysseric. The qualifier from France knocked off seventh seed Elias Ymer 6-2, 6-4. Eysseric saved all four break points he faced, capitalizing on three of his own to finish the encounter in 76 minutes.
