Mayer Masters Melzer To Face Donati In Manerbio Semis

The top seeds of the €42,500 Internazionali di Tennis Manerbio fell in the quarterfinals on Friday. The tournament’s number one Gerald Melzer lost to fifth favourite Leonardo Mayer 6-2, 4-6, 4-6.

The 29-year-old from Argentina fired 14 aces, winning 77 per cent of his first service points to prevail in two hours and 15 minutes. Mayer will next play Matteo Donati. The world number 234 from Italy fought past Nils Langer 6-7, 6-4, 6-3. Donati saved both break points he faced, converting three of his own to secure victory in two hours and 25 minutes. Donati will appear in his second semi-final of the season on the ATP Challenger Tour, after he lost to Paolo Lorenzi in Caltanissetta.

The tournament’s number two Taro Daniel fell to Filip Krajinovic. The eighth seed from Serbia saved all of the three break points he faced, capitalizing on three of his own to advance in one hour and 26 minutes. Krajinovic will face Jonathan Eysseric in the stage of the final four.

The French qualifier battled past Lorenzo Sonego, rallying 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Eysseric sent down two aces and won 52 per cent of the total points played to finish the encounter in two hours and seven minutes. Krajinovic emerged victorious from all of the three previous matches between the two. The last one took place in San Sebastian in 2009.
