QUEBEC CITY, September 16, 2016

The two remaining Canadians in the singles draw at the WTA National Bank Cup presented by Mazda, Eugenie Bouchard (Montreal, QC) and Françoise Abanda (Montreal, QC),  were defeated in the second round on Thursday night at PEPS on the campus of Laval University.

During Thursday’s night session, Bouchard and Abanda had the chance to take two of the four spots remaining in the final eight. For her part, top-seeded Bouchard was upset 6-2, 6-3 by Russian Alla Kudryavtseva in 62 minutes.

“The province of Quebec has good vibes for me, I have to say, I love Canada, it’s amazing,” Kudryavtseva said after the match. “The knowledgeable tennis people always come. They cheer for their favourites, but at the same time they’re not disrespectful, they’re appreciative of a good match. “It’s a pleasure to play here in Quebec and all of Canada.”

Abanda closed the night with a close 7-6(2), 7-5 loss Jessica Pegula to make it four US-Americans in the quarterfinals.

In the opening match of the day, Belgium’s Alison Van Uytvanck advanced to the quarterfinals thanks to a 6-3, 6-4 win over Czech lucky loser Barbora Stefkova 6-3, 6-4 in 72 minutes. Océane Dodin reached her first career WTA quarterfinal after defeating US-American Sachia Vickery in exactly one hour of play.
