TIBURON, September 26, 2016

The second qualifying round of the $100,000 Wells Fargo Tiburon Challenger saw 2016 Junior Wimbledon champion Denis Shapovalov going on to win after losing the first set to Cal Berkeley’s Andre Goransson 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. The 17-year-old Canadian sent down nine aces, winning 76 per cent of his first service points to prevail in one hour and 21 minutes.

Emilio Gomez of Ecuador, son of famed tennis star Andres Gomez, bested Filip Bergevi 6-4, 6-4 in 80 minutes of play. Italy’s Salvatore Caruso prevailed over Stanford’s Tom Fawcett in straight sets, winning 6-4, 6-2.

One of the day’s highlights was a close-fought match between Michael Mmoh of the United States and Erik Crepaldi of Italy, with Mmoh winning 11-9 in a third tie-breaker after two hours and 36 minutes. Matt Reid caused the upset of the day, knocking out the qualifying’s top seed Alessandro Giannessi with a 7-6, 7-5 victory in one hour and 38 minutes.

Tim Smyczek, winner of last year’s Tiburon Challenger, makes his first appearance, when main-draw play starts on Monday.
