MADRID, November 23, 2016
Conchita Martinez has been officially re-confirmed as Spanish Davis Cup and Fed Cup team captain for the 2017 season. This was announced at a press conference of the Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) on Monday at the Club de Tennis of “La Salut” in Barcelona, with the coach herself, second Vice President Tomás Carbonell, Sports Director Javier Soler and host club president Felip Ródenas attending.
The former Wimbledon champion took over the Spanish women’s team in 2013 to replace Arantxa Sánchez Vicario. Two years later, she also assumed responsibility of the men’s team after the resignation of Carlos Moyá.
Spanish Men’s Mapfre Team will debut in their return to the Davis Cup World Group from February 3 to 5, 2017, visiting Croatia, who is competing in the 2016 final against Argentina next weekend. A week later, the women’s team will play on 11 and 12 February in the Czech Republic.
Talking about the Davis Cup tie against Croatia, Martinez seemed to be confident that Rafael Nadal will be part of the Spanish squad. However, she also added that it will depend on the situation during the week.
“Anyway I keep believing in the committment that players showed since when I became captain. They got together to help the team come back into the World Group and now we aim to win the Davis Cup. With these players you can have a great team to win,” she told the Tennis World Magazine.
