Stefanos Tsitsipas headlined second round action of the €42,500 Andria E Castel Del Monte Challenger, held at the local Palasport Arena on Thursday. The only 18-year-old from Greece, who captured this year’s Boys’ Doubles Championship at Wimbledon, fought past Laurynas Grigelis of Lithuania, winning 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.
Tsitsipas, seeded third, fired 16 aces, saved the only break point he faced, capitalizing on one of his own to prevail in one hour and 56 minutes. The World No. 203 from Athens will next take on Egor Gerasimov from Belarus. The 24-year-old from Minsk cruised past Nikola Mektic of Croatia, winning 6-4, 6-2 in only 52 minutes.
Fifth favourite Aldin Setkic also advanced to the quarterfinals. The 28-year-old from Bosnia and Herzegovina beat Italian Alessandro Bega 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. Setkic hit 22 aces, winning 87 per cent of his first service points and converted three of his 10 break point chances to advance after two hours and 10 minutes. Next up for Setkic will be the tournament’s number four Luca Vanni. The fourth seed from Italy won 54 per cent of the total points played to seal a 6-4, 7-6 victory over Swiss qualifier Yann Marti.
