CHENNAI, January 8, 2017

Roberto Bautista-Agut beat 20-year-old Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-4 for his fifth ATP World Tour title and improves to 5-6 in finals, winning the Aircel Chennai Open on Sunday.
The World No. 14 from Spain did not face a break point, converting two of his own and won 84 per cent of his first serve points in the 73-minute victory.

“I think it’s a great tournament and that’s why it’s my fifth time in a row coming here. This tournament has helped me a lot to get into the Top 50 players [in the world]. I’m a much better player now than five years ago. I have more experience and I’ve improved a lot of things,” Bautista-Agut told and added:

“There are a lot of tournaments and a lot of points coming up, but I’m happy with the start to win the first week of the year.”

After saving match point against Dudi Sela to reach his first tour-level final, Medvedev was bidding to become the third #NextGenATP player to win a tour-level title, alongside Alexander Zverev (St. Petersburg, 2016) and Karen Khachanov (Chengdu, 2016).

“He was more consistent than me today. He played amazing tennis. I couldn’t do much about it. I tried my best but he was the better player today,” the Russian stated afterwards.

Bopanna And Nedunchezhiyan Win All-Indian-Doubles Final

Indians Rohan Bopanna and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan won their first title together and became the first all-Indian team to claim the Chennai crown since 2011, when Mahesh Bhupathi andLeander Paes lifted the trophies. The pair won the final 6-3, 6-4 against Purav Raja and Divij Sharan in 65 minutes.

“They put a lot of pressure on us. We had to play smart. It’s great to start the year with a title. It’s a positive sign I’m headed in the right direction and I’m looking forward to the coming season,” Bopanna told.

“I loved the moment, it was great. In my backyard… being in the final, not being seeded, it’s already a great start to the season,” Nedunchezhiyan added.
