The Ferrer Tennis Academy, located at the Jávea Tennis Club, is hosting this week’s inaugural edition of the $15,000 BBVA Future Vila de Xàbia. The Academy is run by Javier Ferrer Ern, who has over 28 years dedicated to professional tennis as a player and then as a coach. He is also the brother of former World No. 3 David Ferrer, who pulled out of BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells due to an achilles injury.

After a Monday washout, main draw action of the ITF Pro Circuit clay court event kicked off on Tuesday featuring 13 Spaniards.

Second seed Carlos Taberner edged past Marcos Giraldi Requena, winning 7-5, 7-5. The 19-year-old from Valenia converted four of his 13 break point chances to celebrate his second victory over Giraldi Requena in as many meetings between the two. The encounter lasted two hours and 18 minutes.

The tournament’s number three Marc Giner beat Australian wild card Harrison Lombe 6-2, 6-4. The World No. 347 won 69 per cent of his first service points to advance in 69 minutes.

Javier Martí is back in action, competing in his only third tournament of the season. The former World No. 170, who dropped in the ATP Rankings to 803rd position due to injuries, fought past eighth seeded Argentine Juan Ignacio Galarza 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 in almost three hours of play.

World No. 1629 Sergi Perez Contri, who entered the main draw with a wild card, upset Albert Alcaraz Ivorra, winning 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 26 minutes to meet the winner of the encounter between top seed Pedro Martínez Portero and Argentine lucky loser Dante Gennaro. First round matches continue on Wednesday.
