The lone ATP Challenger taking place this week is the €43,000 Internazionali Di Tennis Citta Di Vicenza held at the Circolo Tennis Palladio 98 in Vicenza.
Fifth seed Maximilian Marterer headlined Monday’s first round action with a 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 victory over US-American Mitchell Krueger. The 21-year-old German withstood eight aces, hitting three of his own to prevail after two hours and five minutes.
Marterer will next take on Italian wild card Matteo Berrettini, who beat Spanish veteran Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo 6-4, 6-4.
The tournament’s number four Guido Andreozzi fell in the opening round. Lorenzo Giustino knocked out the Argentine, winning 6-3, 6-2. The 25-year-old from Italy capitalized on four of his eight break point chances to secure victory in one hour and 16 minutes.
Next up for Giustino will be the winner of the encounter between Salvatore Caruso of Italy and Slovenian qualifier Blaz Rola.
On Tuesday, Vicenza’s top seed Andrej Martin will step into action. The World No. 106 from Slovakia faces Jan Satral of the Czech Republic. Second favourite Alessandro Giannessi will play Serbian wild card and Neckarcup Heilbronn champion Filip Krajinovic.
