The top three seeds of the €43,000 Internazionali Di Tennis Citta Di Vicenza crashed out in the opening round on Tuesday. The tournament’s number one Andrej Martin from Slovakia lost to Jan Satral of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-1.
Satral saved both break points he faced, converting four of his own to advance in one hour and six minutes. Satral goes on to play Italian wild card Gianluca Mager.
In-form-Serbian Filip Krajinovic, who captured his fifth ATP Challenger career title in Heilbronn two weeks ago, knocked out second favourite Alessandro Giannessi from Italy. The 25-year-old Sombor native won 52 per cent of the total points played to secure a6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory in one hour and 55 minutes.
Next up for Krajinovic will be Joao Domingues. The World No. 176 from Portugal clinched his maiden Challenger crown in Mestre last Saturday and fought past Uladzimir Ignatik from Belarus, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in two hours and 23 minutes to book his place in the second round.
“I’m playing very well this year, so I couldn’t be happier right now. It makes me feel proud and motivated to get better and better,” Domingues told after lifting the trophy last weekend.
Italian qualifier Edoardo Eremin fought past third seed Gerald Melzer from Austria, rallying 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. The 23-year-old from Cassine fired 12 aces, winning 88 per cent of his first service points to finish the encounter after one hour and 40 minutes. Eremin will next take on Marton Fucsovics of Hungary.
With the tournament’s number five Maximilian Marterer from Germany and seventh favourite Laslo Djere of Serbia, only two seeded players are left in the draw.
