Felicano López

STUTTGART, June 15, 2017

With the final four second round matches played on Thursday, the quarterfinals of the MercedesCup are set. Feliciano López of Spain opened centre court action with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win over Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.

The 35-year-old Madrid resident, who also won the only previous grass meeting between the two in Eastbourne three years ago, capitalized on three of his six break point chances to prevail in one hour and 34 minutes.

López will next take on Tomas Berdych. The third seed from the Czech Republic opened his Stuttgart campaign with a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Bernard Tomic of Australia. Berdych fired 14 aces and broke serve three times to advance in one hour and 16 minutes.

“He was a tough opponent. We always have good battles, so I was expecting a tough one today,” said Berdych. “I played quite well and took my chances, then had things under control in the second set. It was a good test and I’m glad to get through.”

López and Berdych will meet for the 13th time with their head-to-head record tied at 6-6.

Jerzy Janowicz caused the upset of the day, knocking out the tournament’s number two Grigor Dimitrov from Bulgaria. The 26-year-old from Poland saved all three break points he faced, converting one of his own to seal a 7-6, 6-3 win in one hour and 18 minutes.

Janowicz will appear in his first quarterfinal on the ATP World Tour since reaching the stage of the final eight in Halle two years ago. He will play Frenchman Benoit Paire, who cruised past German qualifier Peter Gojowczyk 6-2, 6-4 in only 52 minutes. Janowicz is leading 2-0 in their head-to-head series.
