LISBON, June 15, 2017

The ATP Challenger Tour has returned to Portugal for the first time since 2013 with the inaugural €43,000 Lisboa Belém Open, held on clay at the Club Internacional de Foot-Ball in Lisboa this week.

The tournament’s top seeds Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Adam Pavlasek from the Czech Republic lost in the opening round but third favourite Taro Daniel made it into the quarterfinals.

The highest ranked player left in the singles draw had opened his title bid with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win over Portuguese wild card entry Joao Monteiro before he beat Romanian qualifier Dragos Dima in straight sets on Wednesday. In the stage of the final eight Daniel will take on Frenchman Gleb Sakharov.

The 24-year-old will be joined by seventh seed Pedro Sousa. The World No. 154 from Lisbon native is the last local player in the singles main draw and rallied past Federico Coria of Argentina 2-6, 7-6, 6-0 in one hour and 50 minutes on Thursday. Next up for Sousa will be Italian Gianluigi Quinzi.

Spanish qualifier Daniel Munoz de la Nava and German Oscar Otte will meet in another battle in the stage of the final eight. In the opening quarterfinal match-up on Friday noon, Attila Balazs from Hungary and Belgian Joris de Loore will go head to head.
