HAMBURG, June 16, 2017

World No. 17 Pablo Carreno Busta will headline the ATP 500 German Open held at the Rothenbaum venue in Hamburg from 22 to 30 July 2017. The 25-year-old Spaniard, who captured the title at the Estoril Open earlier this season and advanced to the quarterfinals at Roland Garros, will be the tournament’s lone Top 20-player this year.

Germany’s top ranked player, Alexander Zverev as well as his brother Mischa, did not enter the tournament’s 111th edition. The 20-year-old, who was born in Hamburg, even has a contract with the tournament until 2018. However, the brothers prefer to start the hard court season in Washington one week later and do not want to switch to clay ahead of it.

“If he changes his mind, we will still have a wild card for him, but chances are very, very low that he is going to play here,” Rothenbaum tournament director Michael Stich told on Thursday. “We still have some great players here but his appearance would have been great for the tournament.” The 48-year-old is still the last German player, who captured the title in Hamburg back in 1993.

With Philipp Kohlschreiber, Florian Mayer and Jan-Lennard Struff three local players will compete in the main draw. They will be joined by veteran Tommy Haas, who is currently enjoying a great run at the MercedesCup in Stuttgart as well as youngster Daniel Altmaier. Both received a wild card.

Earlier in the week, Tommy Haas will kick off the event facing Michael Stich at the MANHAGEN Classics on 23rd July at 6 p.m. The two opponents of the exhibition match have only faced each other once at the ATP World Tour. The Wimbledon champion of 1991 won against 18-year-old Haas in four sets at the US Open in 1996.
