Two German players advanced to the quarterfinals of the WTA Mallorca Open on Wednesday. Julia Goerges impressed with great grass court tennis to shock top seeded Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 6-1, 6-2.
The 28-year-old sent down six aces, winning 89 per cent of her first service points to secure victory in only 59 minutes.
Goerges will next take on Sabine Lisicki, who continued her successful comeback to the tour with a second round win over Shelby Rogers from the United States. The 27-year-old Bradenton resident broke serve three times to prevail 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 11 minutes.
“I’m really happy,” Lisicki said after the match. “Today feels like the first real win because Kiki retired yesterday. It’s nice to finish and serve it out.
“With every match, I start to feel better and better. It’s about getting those matches under your belt, getting the rhythm. I expect to give 100% on the court and to keep enjoying it.”
In the top half of the draw, the two Germans will be joined by US-American teenager Catherine Bellis as well as Kristyna Pliskova from the Czech Republic in the stage of the final eight.
