Novak Djokovic continued his campaign for a third Wimbledon title, winning his third round match against Ernests Gulbis of Latvia 6-4, 6-1, 7-6 on Saturday afternoon.

Gulbis, who upset No. 29 seed Juan Martin del Potro in the previous round, earned an early 4-2 lead in the opening set but Djokovic fought back, breaking serve four times to reach the second week at SW 19 after two hours and 11 minutes.

“I am delighted with my performance today, I thought I raised the level of tennis, comparing to the first couple of matches,” Djokovic told the BBC. “This was the most focused I have been on the court and it came at the right time. Gulbis presents a great challenge; he is very unpredictable and has a huge serve. It’s not easy playing on grass against someone like that.

“In general, I am pleased with the way I have felt and the way I played, I’m glad the crowd enjoyed it.”

Next up for Djokovic will be Frenchman Adrian Mannarino.

Federer Beats Mischa Zverev

Seven-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer followed the second seed as he beat Germany’s Mischa Zverev 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the final match on Centre Court. The Swiss maestro fired 13 aces, winning 83 per cent of his first service points to prevail in one hour and 49 minutes.

“I thought it was a good match, it was fun against a serve and volley player, where you will see some lobs and passing shots. It was nice to see that and the crowd was unbelievable. He’s a great guy, we fed off each other and played a great match,” Federer told the BBC and will next play Grigor Dimitrov from Bulgaria

Alexander Zverev will play the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time. The 20-year-old German ended the dream run of Austrian qualifier Sebastian Ofner, who played his first ever tournament on grass. Zverev secured a straightforward 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 victory in one hour and 33 minutes.

Zverev will next take on 2016 finalist Milos Raonic of Canada, who beat 25^th seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas from Spain 7-6, 6-4, 7-5. The pair will meet for the second time. The German youngster was successful at the ATP Masters 1000 in Rome in May.

Elsewhere, Austria’s Dominic Thiem, seeded eighth, scored a comfortable win over World No. 67 Jared Donaldson from the United States, 7-5 6-4 6-2.
