Clay court tennis action has returned to one of Sweden’s most typical summer resorts for the second edition of the €43,000 Bastad Challenger, held at the Bastad Tennis Complex from 8 to 15 July and organized by the Swedish Tennis Federation.
Two local players battled through the qualifying on Sunday to reach the main draw. Isak Arvidsson fought past Christian Samuelsson 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, firing 11 aces to advance in one hour and 50 minutes. Arvidsson will take on Vaclav Safranek from the Czech Republic in the opening round.
Fred Simonsson also had to go the distance, scoring a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 win over fellow Swede Jonas Eriksson Ziverts in just under two hours of play. Simonsson, ranked World No. 805, will appear in his first ATP Challenger main draw, facing eighth seed Guillermo Garcia-López of Spain.
Hubert Hurkacz also made it to the main draw. The 20-year-old from Poland sent down seven aces, winning 72 per cent of his first service points to seal victory in two hours and 15 minutes. Hurkacz will play sixth seed Arthur de Greef from Belgium.
Juan Ignacio Londero of Argentina defeated Jurgen Zopp from Estonia 7-6, 6-4 to set up a first round clash with Kamil Majchrzak from Poland.
