Venus Williams Returns To Wimbledon Final Taking On Muguruza

Venus Williams is back in the Wimbledon final

LONDON, July 13, 2017

Venus Williams and Garbine Muguruza will compete in Saturday’s women’s singles final at Wimbledon.

On Thursday, Muguruza defeated Magdalena Rybarikova, 6-1, 6-1 to reach her third career major final, and second at the All England Club. The encounter lasted 65 minutes.

“I wasn’t expecting anything because you never know how it’s going to go,” Muguruza said after the match. “I saw her play before. I saw she was playing very good, very talented.

“I just expected myself to be ready as much as I could. Maybe the score did look maybe more easier than actually playing during the games.”

Venus Williams ended the run of local favourite Johanna Konta, winning 6-4, 6-2 in one hour and 16 minutes.

“I’ve played a lot of finals here. One more win will be amazing. It won’t be a given but I’ll give it my all,” told Venus Williams, who will seek a sixth Wimbledon crown.

“The crowd were very nice to me. The crowd were so fair, I know they love Jo.

“I think Jo handled the pressure.

“No point was easy. I tried to climb on top and get another point.”

On her title match against Muguruza she said:

“Both Garbine and I play so well on grass. I’ll have to ask Serena (Serena Williams defeated Muguruza in the 2015 final) for advice.

“I missed Serena terribly before the match. I wish she was here.”

Williams and Muguruza will meet for the fifth time with the US-American leading 3-1 in head-to-head records. Yet, it was the Spaniard, who won the last match between the two in Rome earlier this season.
