Organizers of the Open Castilla y León, held on hard courts at the Villa de El Espinar from 29 July to 6 August 2017, announced Friday the wild card entries for the €85,000 ATP Challenger event.
Spaniards Gerard Granollers, Carlos Taberner, Bernabé Zapata Miralles and Nicolás Álvarez Varola will compete in the main draw of the tournament’s 31st edition.
Granollers will return to El Espinar for the first time since 2014. The 28-year-old from Barcelona is currently ranked at World No. 520 but reached a career high World No. 217 in 2013. Granollers captured 16 ITF Futures titles. His last came in Quinta Da Marinha, Portugal, earlier this season.
19-year-old Taberner is one of Spain’s most promising player. After clinching three titles on the ITF Pro Circuit, the teenager enjoys a career high World No. 270 and has recently established on the ATP Challenger Tour. Two days after the end of the Segovia tournament, Taberner will turn 20.
Zapata-Miralles is also ranked on a personal best position. The World No. 286 has already lifted three ITF Futures trophies in 2017, including back-to-back titles in Gandia and Getxo this month.
Local player Álvarez Varola is only 16 years old and is the second best players of the Spanish region Castilla y León. He claimed two ITF Junior titles this year and made it to the semis at Idanha-A-Nova, Portugal, at senior’s level.
Former World No. 2 Vera Zvonareva from Russia as well as Claudia Hoste, Marina Bassols and Ángela Díez of Spain will receive the wild cards for the $25,000 ITF Women’s tournament, taking place the same week.
