KITZBÜHEL, July 29, 2017
Pablo Cuevas and Fabio Fognini will be the top two seeds at the 73rd edition of the Generali Open in Kitzbühel. The first four players receive a bye in the 28-man-draw.
Cuevas, who is currently ranked at World No. 26 and still competing in the doubles draw alongside Marc López at the ATP event in Hamburg, awaits the winner of the encounter between Nikoloz Basilashvili from Georgia and Austrian wild card entry Sebastian Ofner.
“It’s going to be a tough opener for Sebastian but there are no easy opponents in the main draw,” tournament director Alexander Antonitsch said.
Fognini will open his Kitzbühel campaign against either Andrey Kuznetsov from Russia or a qualifier. Defending champion Paolo Lorenzi will also return to the Tyrolean Alps, being the tournament’s number three. The 35-year-old Italian will either play Joao Sousa of Portugal or Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny.
A special first round match will be the encounter between veteran Tommy Haas and fellow German Jan-Lennard Struff. The latter won the only previous meeting between the two in Munich earlier this season.
“Struffi is a really nice guy and I have always tried to support him,” told Haas on Saturday afternoon. “He reached a personal career high this season. That’s great for him. He beat me in Munich, so there is still a score to settle with him. However, it is going to be very tough.”
