Murray And Cilic Withdraw From Rogers Cup

Andy Murray

MONTREAL, August 3, 2017

Tennis Canada announced Thursday that World No. 1 Andy Murray and world no. 6 Marin Cilic have withdrawn from Rogers Cup presented by National Bank.

This is the second consecutive year that Murray will miss Canada’s Masters 1000 event after competing in the tournament every year from 2006-2016. The Scot needs more time to heal his hip injury.

“I am sad to be missing the tournament in Montreal because I have many great memories from my time in Canada. I am doing everything I can to return as quickly as possible” said Murray.

Murray has enjoyed a lot of success in Montreal and Toronto, winning the event three times. In 2015, he defeated Novak Djokovic in the final to win his second title in Montreal. For his part, Cilic posted his best Canadian result in 2008 when he reached the quarter-finals.
“We would have liked for Andy to be able to defend his title that he won here in 2015, but we wish him a very speedy recovery and to Marin Cilic as well following his great run at Wimbledon,” said Eugène Lapierre, Tournament Director of Rogers Cup in Montreal.

Following the withdrawal of Murray, Rafael Nadal from Spain and Roger Federer of Switzerland will now be the top two seeds in Montreal and will be placed at the top and bottom of the draw. Rising stars Dominic Thiem from Austria and Germany’s Alexander Zverev will round out the top 4.
