Roberto Carballés-Baena of Spain and Swedish teenager Mikael Ymer headlined Monday’s first round evening session at the €64,00 Acqua Dolomia Tennis Cup, held on clay at the Eurosporting complex in Cordenons.
After an even first set, the fourth seed from Tenerife took command of the match in the second set, breaking serve five times to secure a 6-4, 6-1 victory in one hour and 37 minutes.
Carballés-Baena will next take on Kamil Majchrzak. The 21-year-old from Poland edged past Pedro Cachín of Argentina 6-3, 6-4. Majchrzak lost his serve three times but capitalized on six of his own 11 break point chances to advance in one hour and 17 minutes.
Italian wild card entry Lorenzo Sonego upset the tournament’s number five Attila Balazs from Hungary 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. The World No. 427 from Torino won 80 per cent of his first service points and 51 per cent of the total points played to prevail afater one hour and 53 minutes. Next up for Sonego will be either fellow Italian Matteo Viola or Spaniard Enrique López-Pérez.
Italians Gianluca di Nicola and Adelchi Virgili, as well as Christian Lindell of Sweden and Martín Cuevas from Uruguay won their final matches of the qualifying to complete the main draw.
