The ATP Challenger clay court swing continues in Italy this week with the 12th edition of the €43,000 Torneo Città di Como – Trofeo “Intensa SanPaolo”. The tournament takes place from 28 August to 3 September at the Tennis Club Como.
Top seed and last year’s runner-up Marco Cecchinato opened his title bid on Monday with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Goncalo Oliveira from Portugal. The World No. 102 saved all of the three break points he faced, converting four of his own to secure victory in one hour and 13 minutes. Cecchinato will next take on only 18-year-old Italian Riccardo Balzerani.
The tournament’s number seven Oscar Otte eased past Italian wild card entry Julian Ocleppo 7-6, 6-0. The World No. 140 from Germany capitalized on five of his seven break point chances to advance in one hour and 18 minutes. Next up for Otte will be the winner of the encounter between fellow German Jeremy Jahn and Steven Diez of Canada.
Earlier in the day, French teenager Corentin Moutet, Austrian Lenny Hampel, local favourite Ginaluca di Nicola and Constant Lestienne of France qualified for the event to complete the main draw. Kamil Majchrzak of Poland replaces Manerbio champion Roberto Carballés-Baena of Spain, who pulled out of the tournament with a right leg injury.
