It was five minutes past two on Tuesday morning when fourth seed Alexander Zverev converted his second match point with an overhead smash to start his US Open campaign. The 20-year-old German, fought past qualifier Darian King from Barbados 7-6, 7-5, 6-4.
After a bit of a rusty start, Zverev sent down six aces, hitting 54 winners to seal victory in two hours and 49 minutes.
“He played really well and made it difficult for me to find my rhythm. It was important to win the opening set,” told Zverev, who will next take on Borna Coric of Croatia, who defeated Jiri Vesely from the Czech Republic 7-6, 7-6, 6-2 in two hours and 28 minutes, firing nine aces.
