Sweden has achieved promotion to the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Group I Europe with a doubles victory on Saturday at the Tennis Stadium in Bastad. Johan Brunstrom and Markus Eriksson defeated Lithuania‘s tandem of Tadas Babelis and Laurynas Grigelis 7-6, 6-3, 6-1.

The Swedish pair sent down seven aces and broke serve six times to give the hosts an insurmountable 3-0 lead ahead of Sunday’s reverse singles rubbers.

“It was a pleasure to play with Markus, we are a very good team and prepared this match in the right way. It is always great to play in front of your home crowd and your family. That doesn’t happen too often. We are excited and happy about the win,” Brunstrom was pleased afterwards.

“Johan and Markus have a great team spirit, and are so good for the team, in particular for the younger players,” Swedish Davis Cup captain Johan Hedsberg added. The Scandinavians will return to Group I next year.
