The first round of qualifying ushered in the start of the Erste Bank Open 500 at the Stadthalle in Vienna on Saturday with top seed Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia falling to Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-1, 7-5.
The 31-year-old from the Ukraine won 25 of his 29 first service points and gained four breaks to advance in 66 minutes. Stakhovksy will next play sixth favourite Guillermo Garcia-López. The Spanish veteran fought past Jerzy Janowicz of Poland 7-6, 6-4. Garcia-López saved the only break point he faced, firing 11 aces to secure victory in one hour and 48 minutes.
Guido Pella outlasted Swedish #NextGenATP player Elias Ymer 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. The 27-year-old from Argentina converted five of his six break point opportunities to prevail in just under two hours of play. Next up for Pella will Lukas Lacko of Slovakia, who beat Brazilian Rogerio Dutra Silva 7-5, 6-4 in one hour and 26 minutes.
