Top seed Ruben Bemelmans advanced to the quarterfinals of the €43,000 Bauer Watertechnology Cup with a second round win over Luca Vanni on Wednesday. The World No. 86 from Belgium overcame the Italian veteran 6-3, 6-7, 6-1.
Bemelmans withstood 16 aces, breaking his opponent’s serve four times to secure victory in two hours and 15 minutes. The 2014 Eckental champion awaits the winner of the encounter between Igor Sijsling from the Netherlands and seventh favourite Jerzy Janowicz of Poland.
Bemelmans will be joined in the stage of the final eight by Sebastian Ofner. The eighth seed from Austria beat Aldin Setkic from Bosnia and Herzegovina 7-6, 6-3. Ofner fired 16 aces, winning 88 per cent of his first service points to finish the match after one hour and 12 minutes. The 21-year-old will next play Mirza Basic, who knocked out third seed Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan 7-5, 7-6.
