Jerzy Janowicz caused an upset at the €43,000 Bauer Watertechnology Cup in Eckental when he defeated the top seed and 2014 champion of the ATP Challenger event, Ruben Bemelmans, in Friday’s quarterfinals 6-4, 6-4.

The World No. 136 from Poland fired eight aces, winning 88 per cent of his first service points to secure victory in one hour and three minutes.
“This has been my best match this week so far,” Janowicz was pleaed with his performance. “It was not easy to play today, as we had some issues with the chair umpire. We needed to stay focused but I am happy to be through.”
Janowicz will next take on Matthias Bachinger, who eased past last year’s runner-up Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-1. The 30-year-old German converted four of his five break point chances to advance in one hour and 14 minutes. Bachinger only dropped 13 games en route to the semi-finals.
Local Favourite Marterer Advances
Second seed Maximilian Marterer delighted the home crowd, cruising past #NextGenATP player Corentin Moutet of France 6-0, 6-1. The 22-year-old from Nuremberg didn’t face a single break point and won 73 per cent of the total points played to advance in only 43 minutes.
“It’s simply fantastic to play here. The atmosphere is great and it’s the only tournament, where I can sleep at home. Friends and family are attending the matches. It’s really fun out there,” Marterer said.
The World No. 106 will next face eighth seed Sebastian Ofner. The 21-year-old Austrian saved all three break points he faced, capitalizing on two of his own to beat Mirza Basic from Bosnia and Herzegovina 6-3, 6-4 in only 56 minutes.
