Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera is the champion of the $15,000 Midtown Weston Futures, held on outdoor clay at the Midtown Athletic Club. The 20-year-old from Chile, who didn’t drop a set en route to the title match, cruised past No. 7 seed Fred Gil of Portugal 6-2, 6-0 in Sunday’s singles final.
Barrios Vega capitalized on all of his six break point chances to seal victory in only 40 minutes.
By clinching his fourth ITF Pro Circuit career trophy, the Santiago de Chile native takes away $2,160 in prize money as well as 18 ATP ranking points. Barrios Vega moves up 18 spots to World No. 443.
On Friday, Fred Gil teamed up with Frenchman Maxime Chaval to claim the doubles title. The top seeds defeated the all-Colombian combination of Jose Daniel Bendeck and Alejandro Gomez 6-4, 6-3. The encounter lasted one hour and 13 minutes.
