BUENOS AIRES, February 19, 2018

Dominic Thiem claimed his ninth ATP World Tour title, prevailing at the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires without dropping a set. The No. 1 seed from Austria defeated Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia 6-2, 6-4 in Sunday’s singles final.

Thiem saved two break points, converting three of his own to extend his perfect mark at the Argentina Open to 9-0 after one hour and 30 minutes. He has previously won the title in 2016. The Austrian’s victory puts him in elite company, becoming just the third player in the last 30 years to win multiple titles in the Argentine capital following David Ferrer and Carlos Moya.

“When you win a tournament it’s good news, because we’re used to losing more than winning. With these conditions – slow and hot – there are many chances for me to play well. It was my goal before starting the week and it is incredible to have achieved it,” Thiem said.

Bedene was seeking his maiden title in his third final, having previously finished runner-up in Chennai in 2015 (l. to Wawrinka) and in Budapest last year (l. to Pouille).

“It was a great week for me. Domi played at a great level and is the deserved champion. I hope to win my first title at some point,” Bedene said.

Molteni/Zeballos Prevail

Andres Molteni and Horacio Zeballos took the doubles trophy. The Argentine tandem upset the tournament’s No. 1 seeds Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah of Colombia 6-3, 7-5, 10-3. The final lasted one hour and 30 minutes.

“Hopefully we’ll continue the streak and continue playing together as much as possible,” Molteni said.
