Lorenzo Sonego advanced to the quarterfinals of the €64,000 Internazionali di Tennis Trofeo Faip-Perrel held at Pala Norda in Bergamo. The No. 5 seed from Italy edged past former top 10-player Ernests Gulbis of Latvia 6-4, 6-3 on Wednesday evening.
Sonego saved all four break points he faced, capitalizing on two of his own to seal victory in one hour and 28 minutes. The 22-year-old Torino native will next take on Marat Safwat of Egypt, who benefited from the retirement of No. 4 seed Mats Moraing from Germany, leading 6-3.
Jurgen Zopp also made it to the stage of the final eight with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Italian lucky loser Luca Vanni. The encounter lasted one hour and 29 minutes. The No. 3 seed from Estonia now awaits either eighth favourite Uladzimir Ignatik from Belarus or Adam Pavlasek of the Czech Republic.
Later in the evening, the tournament’s top seed stepped into action, as Matteo Berrettini beat fellow Italian Matteo Viola 6-3, 6-1. The World No. 121 from Rome outpointed his opponent 66-45 in 65 minutes. Berrettini will play Frenchman Constant Lestienne in the second round.
